Dongsha Experiment Background

The Seven SouthEast Asian Studies (7 SEAS) program was organized through a collaborative effort with the US State Department and governments in Southeast Asia, NCAR Research Applications Laboratory, NASA, and the Office of Naval Research. 7SEAS program seeks to perform interdisciplinary research in the field of aerosol-meteorology and climate interaction in the Southwest Asian region. 7SEAS will peak with a major field campaign performed in the 2011-2012 time frame. The Dongsha Experiment in 2010 spring is a pre-study of 7SEAS. The Goal of this experiment is developing the Dongsha Island as an atmospheric observing platform of atmospheric chemistry, radiation and meteorological parameters, and to build up the capacity of atmospheric measurements in cruise missions. Durning March-May 2010, Taiwan EPA Mobile 1 and NASA COMMIT have monitored continuously in Donsha Island. Two Intensive Observation Periods (IOP) were conducted during 3/14-31 and 4/10-20 in the following locations: Dongsha Island, Hengchung, Mt. Lulin, DaNang (Vietnam) and ChingMai (Thailand) (Fig.1). Items of measured during IOPs include meteorological data, sounding, radiation/AOD/lidar, air quality, aerosol chemistry, Hg, dioxins and PAHs, VOCs, GHGs. Besides, Ocean Researcher 1 took a vessel observation of meteorological data, air pollutants, Hg and chemical composition of particle matter over Northern South China Sea.
